What advice are entertainment organizations asking for today that they weren't a year or two ago?
Dr. Yalda T. Uhls: "Organizations are gaining awareness that authentic stories matter and that they need to move beyond number counting to develop authentic and representative content that resonates with their audience. We have been sought out for trainings for creative teams on topics that address some deeper complexity than what a typical DEI presentation may offer ... We find the most important and relevant information around DEI and child development and "translate" it in a way that is easy to grasp. Then we apply a film industry lens to it to create actionable takeaways for each subject. Current workshops include intersectionality, colorism, character body creation, gender identity and expression, and inequality.
Where is the entertainment industry still missing the mark when it comes to diversity and inclusion, and how can companies do better?
Dr. Uhls: Companies need to do a better job of bringing in more diversity off screen. Then once these people have a seat at the table, they need to listen to their input and empower them creatively. There also needs to be an emphasis on breaking stereotypes by creating characters from underrepresented groups that don't fulfill typical roles. Creators have amazing power to shift narratives and audiences are looking for it.
